After you read the first two sections of Brecht’s Writing the Truth: The Five Difficulties and review Lynch’s Ted Talk, please write an essay that compares and contrasts both pieces. This means you need to effectively state the similarities and differences in their work. I would like you to take into consideration that one is a piece of writing while the other is an audio/visual presentation. Please consider the different ways that each author chose to construct their arguments and if one was more or less effective and why.
You are to compare and contrast what Brecht and Lynch have to say about the idea or concept of “Objective Truth” and “Epistemic Responsibility.” You may need to do some research into these terms in order to be able to correctly define and discuss them. Once you feel you understand the concepts, break down what both Lynch and Brecht have to say about these ideas, using direct quotes from the authors, or summarizing or paraphrasing their thoughts to back up your claims. You may want to discuss one author at a time, or you may want to discuss these authors point by point. In the end, you should come to a thesis statement that evaluates what both authors have to say about truth. You may also incorporate your own reactions to each author and their messages in this essay, but this should not be the focus of the paper.
This essay is to be between 3 and 5 pages long, double-spaced, in MLA format. Please double-check that you are formatting correctly. (There is a sample under the Course Content tab of MLA format.) Also- you may be using some citations for this paper. If this is the case, please check under the Course Content tab, where there are links to help you cite correctly. Remember that you should be using in-text citations (in the body of your paper) as well as citations at the end of your paper in a Work Cited page when citing quotes correctly. However, for this paper, I am not requiring a Work-Cited page at the end of the paper. All you need to do is introduce any sources (including Brecht and Lynch) that you are quoting or paraphrasing or summarizing as you write. You will most likely only be citing or quoting Brecht and Lynch. I do not expect other outside sources but you are free to use them if you need or want to.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about citations. Good Luck!
