GEOG 152 Cities of Europe Midterm Exam 11 February 2020 I have attached the midterm question ands the book please let me know if you need anything (such as lecture notes or help!) *******PLEASE HAVE SOME KNOWLEDGE OR BACKGROUND WITH GEOGRAPHY AND THE BOOK Leif Jerram, Streetlife: The Untold History of Europe’s Twentieth Century (Oxford University Press, 2011) Answer both of the following questions (in around 500-800 words double-spaced for each question using paragraphs and no bullet points): Describe how the “center of urban gravity “ in Europe shifted from the northern shores of the Mediterranean Sea to northwestern Europe between 1450 and 1600. Use and describe any maps from the course website that you think help illustrate this movement. Vienna is often seen as a vivid example of how cities incubate “cultural invention.” After considering how the two words are not necessarily contradictory, discuss what it is about late nineteenth and twentieth century European cities in general and then about Vienna in particular between 1870 and 1920 that illustrates this process. To structure your response, be sure to use Jerram’s argument about a new view of “culture” and what five features of cities lend them to cultural invention particularly in relation to the high culture that Vienna exemplified.
